CineCare Deliberation

Kim Henkels de Lange

This panel develops what I term “CineCare Deliberation”, a care ethical moral deliberation that centers around a film/documentary and a “critical insight” derived from care ethics.

A CineCare Deliberation begins with a pre-talk where a moderator introduces a so-called “viewing frame” through which participants are asked to watch the film/documentary. This viewing frame incorporates “critical insights” from care ethics such as care, embodiment/physicality, responsibility, emotion, power, and relationality  (Leget, van Nistelrooij & Visse, 2019).

After the film screening, an after-talk takes place where participants connect the film to their own lives. Care ethical questions guide both the pre- and post-talk conversation. Because care ethics encompasses a broad field, almost any film/documentary can qualify for a screening.

This CineCare Deliberation will focus on the impressive documentary IS.A by Dutch filmmaker Eveline van Dijck, which explores Amsterdam-based intersex, minimalist, and self-taught artist IS.A. The documentary is in Dutch with English subtitles.

My name is Kim Henkels de Lange. I am a trained ICU nurse, 42 years old, living in Utrecht. Last summer, I graduated in Care Ethics and Policy from the University of Humanistic Studies. I have a great affinity with care ethics. It offers me a valuable lens through which to view the world.

In my thesis, I aimed "to contribute to the ongoing discussion about the status and nature of care ethics" (Leget, van Nistelrooij & Visse, 2019, p. 17). I conducted an auto-ethnography to study and reflect on care ethics and its practitioners. What characterizes care ethics? When can one be considered a care ethicist? How can I continue to develop as a care ethics graduate and contribute to the conversation about care ethics both within and beyond academia, enabling more people to discover this valuable perspective?

In addition to nursing and care ethics, I have an affinity for various art forms, including visual, performing, and film arts.
